Meet Roxanne

You might be wondering why it took me so long to finally have Roxanne, my Mio Aerox 155 S.🏍

Mao ni siya ang estorya...

Year 2007, nilarga ako parents, ✈️ nagbilin na silag motor. "Buhi-i Dong, buhii!" Wa man gyud nako buhii uy. 😭

Fast-forward 2020, nag Pandemic, ECQ, GCQ, lisod man kaayo ang transportation uy, mao naka-decide na gyud ko nga "it is about time to have one".

I hope to use Roxanne  in delivering the modules to my students. This school year will be very exciting for all of us!!! Promise, I will be very careful about driving... 🙏

Brigada Eskwela 2012

Each year, two weeks before the opening of classes in June, parents, teachers, students, civic and business groups, local government units, non-government units, and other community residents will help one another for the annual school maintenance program called the BRIGADA ESKWELA.

This is actually my fourth BRIGADA ESKWELA since I entered the teaching profession in 2008. But this year is somewhat special for me. The reason, I finally have a classroom to prepare for the School Year 2012-2013. I was given my first advisory class last school year, but I was unlucky enough to have my class literally 'under the mango tree.'
Learning was fun under the mango tree!
Thank God this year, I am assigned to a classroom. My class will be occupying the dilapidated Modular Building, the first building built at Carmen National High School since it was founded. For quite a few years, it was not used to hold classes, but since we lack classrooms we need to recycle the old building into a room conducive for learning. Yet, I am so happy for this improvement, it is much better than holding a class under the mango tree!

I was really tempted to call the producers of the show Extreme Makeover hoping that they will make a classroom makeover episode. But no, thanks, I need to rely on myself and with some concerned students for this task.

Briefing with our principal, Mrs. Fedilina C. Entero before the start of Brigada Eskwela
Cleaning Time!!!

Transferring the chairs to my assigned room with the help of some students.

Painting the wall with apple green color to have a fresher look.

I know I still have many things to do to make this place a great learning avenue for my students. Wish me luck guys!!!

Entablado

Santacruzan 1985; I am the Constantino
The entablado or the stage of Catmon Town Plaza (now Pedro J. Monsanto Sports  and Cultural Complex) played a major part of every Catmonanon's life. Whether 'twas just for a social program or the commencement exercises in Elementary or High School , most of the Catmonanons, if not all, had experienced the honor and pride of being there. From my Yaya Luz Flores Day Care days, to my Catmon Central Elementary era, and up to my G.J.F.S. years, the entablado was always the final platform of the various memorable presentations and events.

The old stage had its unique architectural design. It had a hemispheric shape and was really a work of art. Each year, I was so excited to witness how Cebuano artists painted murals on the wall of the stage with different Catmon sceneries. I don't know if there is a similar stage that can be found in Cebu with a design like that since I haven't seen one in my lifetime.
EMCEE : Catmon Summer League:  The Inter-Barangay Tournament 2012

Last May 6, 2012, I was invited to host the opening of the the Catmon Summer League:  The Inter-Barangay Tournament 2012 . When I was on the stage, at the beginning I had this weird feeling that I didn't belong, the area is now bigger and very different from the entablado that I was familiar with. I sat in the corner for a while a tried to reminisce all  the sweet memories I had with the old entablado. The smiles I had for remembering the beautiful  things which happened to me on the old entablado made me relaxed a little bit, and eventually made me enjoy my hosting job. But still, I missed the old entablado!!!
Dance Presentation Back in High School

But If we think of the practicality of the new stage and the complex in general, then we can say that it is perfect for the modern Catmonanons. First, it can hold more people, second, the structures and amenities can accommodate modern shows and events and most of all, it has better maintenance and care.

Let us take good care of our new sports complex as we loved and cherished our old town plaza!!! And for all of us who had witnessed the grandeur of our old entablado, let's just keep the memories in our hearts and share it with the younger generations...

World Teachers' Day 2011

I just had one of the happiest moments in my teaching career. Yes, the occasion made it very special, today is our day, today is the "World Teachers’ Day 2011." I know that teachers from different "rich" private schools received expensive stuffs from their students, but for us in public schools, we were beaming even if we just received a simple note of sweet and kind words appreciating our importance in their lives.

The note from my sister Christie Marie, completed my day, it brought me to tears. Thanks to my colleague Mickoy Lerazan who made an extra effort of contacting special persons of her co-teachers to give some surprise messages from our dear ones.

So touched with my sister’s message, here it goes:

I love you Inday Christie.

I am truly blessed this year! I graduated from UP for my Master's of Education degree last April and I finally received my appointment as a regular teacher last February. I know that these blessings have corresponding responsibilities. To be dubbed as a teacher a hero, that is a great challenge. Nobody's perfect, that is very cliche, so to live up to the title as hero requires great sacrifices.

Some of my colleagues are already more than 10 years as teachers and still they are counting for more happy and fruitful years as educators. Their secret of how they last long in this field is their dedication, and for the simple happiness upon a hearing a student saying "Thank you Sir/Mam! You are one of the reasons why I am successful today."

Happy Teachers' Day to all my colleagues anywhere in the world!!!

Reaction to My Father Confessed to Me by Liebe Sollano*

After reading the book My Father Confessed to Me by Liebe Sollano, three virtues came to my mind – destiny, honor and love.

The book is an honest outpouring of Dr. Sollano’s secrets and the daughter’s insights of her father’s journey from being a Reverend Father to a real father. Liebe truly acquired the intelligence and wisdom of his father as manifested in how she examined one by one the important events of her father’s life. Because of the book, I came to the conclusion that Dr. Sollano is truly loved and honored by his own family.

When I was a little boy, I dreamed also of becoming a priest. I was influenced by my late great grandmother who was a public school teacher and a very religious woman. My early introduction to the Catholic catechism and to the different Catholic traditions and customs (like the Flores de Mayo, Novenas and many others), and having also the early experience with the sacraments like confession and communion, I thought I would be a priest someday. I used to be so active in the different church activities since I was a parish youth leader. When I entered college, I took up Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy because my parents wanted me to work in USA. During that time, I had some doubts and guilt of not pursuing my dream of becoming a priest. But after reading the book, I am so glad I did not try to enter the seminary.

Destiny

The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." - Psalm 110:4

Dr. Sollano is destined to be a priest forever, no amount of dispensation can take away the character imprinted on his soul when he was ordained. A priest is a pastor, without the presence of Christ represented by the priest, the sacramental guide of the community; this would not be an ecclesial community in its fullness. From my own point of view, a married priest can still dutifully do his role as the pastor. When seminarians are ordained as priests, all of them profess to remain celibates or unmarried, but this promise made some of them to be hypocrites, living double lives, pretending to be who they are not in front of their parishioners.

Honor

Dr. Sollano is a very honorable man. It was mentioned in the book that because of the promise of celibacy, he was guilty of injustice on six counts. I believe that these six points mentioned in the book can be summarized in one phrase, to save the honor and dignity of the persons concerned. His wife, his children, and many people including his students are indeed lucky enough to have known him. He is very credible to preach about justice and most especially, love.

Love

The book by Liebe is actually a love story, a beautiful story of Liebe’s mom and dad. This story could be featured in “Maala-ala Mo Kaya,’’ and I am quite sure that this episode will garner high ratings and audience views. Seriously, for me, true love is the reason why Dr. Sollano humbly admitted that he was guilty of injustice because of the promise of celibacy.

Conclusion

If I entered the seminary, and eventually ordained as a priest, I’m surely will be one of those who Dr. Sollano called as “Celibate with Kabit.’’ But with the grace of God, I am now having a career with no pretentions, embracing my freedom, artistry and creativity.

I am praying also that in spite my sinfulness, I will become a saint someday. Maybe not all people will accept everyone’s uniqueness in the society, but I believe that we have the same God who will grant justice and love for all.

My Father Confessed to Me is a good material for all types of people who are seeking truth, justice and love.

*Liebe Sollano is the youngest daughter of my professor in Advanced Philosophy class at Cebu Normal University, Dr. Agustin Lumbab Sollano, Jr.

Mano Po

Mano Po is a famous Tagalog film about the lives of the Chinese-Filipino community. I saw this movie in 2002, but because of Warren and Cheyenne's wedding, it made a flashback. Last Monday (August 9, 2010), I attended the wedding of Cheyenne Sudaria - a child hood friend, neighbor and relative. She is married to Warren Soon, a Filipino-Chinese guy from Cebu City.

The solemn part of the celebration was done at Saint Therese of The Child Jesus Church, Lahug, Cebu City. The wedding ceremony was officiated by a dear friend of the bride, our friend, our choir mentor, Rev. Fr. Rogelio Piloton. The more exciting part - the Dinner Party for the newlyweds was held at the Ching Palace.

From the Bride’s side, these were the guests: the Rule Family, the bride’s family on her mother’s side who came all the way from USA and United Kingdom, the Ares Family, the Guinita Family, the Colita Family, the TESDA Family, Catmon Central Teachers, close friends of the bride and relatives of the bride from Catmon and around the world. And from the Groom’s Side, these were the guests: the Soon Family, Tan Family, SY Family, Ciruela Family, Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Family and family friends and relatives of the groom.

The newlyweds were so honored by the presence of Hon. Mayor Michael Rama of Cebu City (one of the Principal Sponsors), who rendered two songs for the couple during the reception. Mr. Wendell Quisido made the bride's beautiful gown and the dresses of the members of the entourage. The Royal Plus Trio performed their beautiful repertoire of jazz, classical and pop music. Mr. Maynard 'Mec' Concha provided the AVP of the love story of Warren and Cheyenne. Everything was so perfect - the cake, the decoration, the ambiance - very magical; and I believe that was the dream wedding of Cheyenne.

Aside from the couple, the other two happiest people that day were Mrs. Era vda. De Sudaria, the mother of the bride and Mrs. Conchita vda. De Soon, the mother of the groom. Dr. Lita Rule Lasilla, Mr. Antonio Concha , Ms. Ceara Jae Chy, Hon. Mayor Michael Rama and the very emotional best friend of the bride, Miss Janice Jusay gave their messages for the couple.

The wedding was not only the union of these two individuals, but also a marriage of the Catmonanon and Chinese culture.

I'm so happy for Cheyenne and Warren! I know some day, I will have my own wedding too. (Great sigh!)

Religion, Culture and Community Life

Photo courtesy of Mec J. Concha

Winston Churchill, a British politician and recipient of Nobel Prize in Literature once said, “Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse.” Art is an integral component of community life. Catmon as a community of faithful Catholics stood for 175 years amidst great drama brought by the forces of nature, economics and politics. With the artistry and innovativeness of the people, tradition like “Sugat” emerged to be a favorite of all. Though this event is not unique to Catmon, nevertheless you can feel a distinctive stroke of Catmonanon creativity in it. Like any form of spectacle, the “Sugat” evolved from a simple manifestation of faith to a grand expression of community culture and life.

"Sugat" in Cebuano or "Salubong" in Tagalog is the Easter celebration of the Catholic Filipinos which never failed to be a crowd drawer in any part of the country. Minglanilla, Cebu is quite famous for this, and they call it as Kabanhawan Festival. Almost all parishes in the Philippines have their own way of celebrating such event.

Utmost jubilation reverberated in the corners of the Catmon town plaza as the angel (portrayed by a pretty girl) went down from heaven (a structure decorated to depict as such) to take off the purple veil that covers the face of the Virgin Mary. This scene was an annual sight, except for last year, when a simpler dramatization of the “Sugat” was done. We were deprived last year of the spectacle of a flying angel, and thank God it’s back! I didn’t really know what the real problem was; some say it was the lack of the bamboo poles and other materials for the “Sugatan” (the structure), others say someone didn’t like to risk the safety of the girl harnessed as an angel. Okay, okay! Let us not dig on that, because one important thing happened - at long last, the structure that was built a few years ago in the upper portion of the entrance of the gym eventually served its purpose, heaven for the “Sugat”.

Guided by the tradition, the art is preserved, yet it grows it splendor. With the use of modern technology – innovation is inevitable – but the heart of the celebration is always kept constant. That’s the Catmonanon spirit. Proud to have one!

Reviving the Prime Youth Organization of Catmon in the 90’s

COM stands for the Children of Mary, an organization of young people looking up to Mary, the Mother of God, as the model of Chastity, Obedience, Piety and Charity. The group also is dedicated to the celebration of traditional Catholic devotions, including the Rosary. COM is a well-known part of the life of Catholic Communities worldwide. According St. Catherine Laboure, it is the Blessed Virgin's wish that a Confraternity of the Children of Mary should be founded. The Children of Mary organization flourished in the mid 20th century. It was originally for female members only, but later, male members were accepted in the organization.

As an answer for the Blessed Virgin’s wish, in 1989, Mrs. Aurora Dorog and Mrs. Fe Concha recruited 8 young girls to become members of the Children of Mary, Catmon Unit. From that very small group, the organization increased not just in number, but also in their dedication of following the foot steps of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The group became the voice of the young people of San Guillermo Parish, since during that time, no other youth organization existed.

In the 90’s, the organization was very active in the different Church activities. During the Christmas season, the group always participated in the different fund raising events of the church, adding music to the air by singing Christmas Carols and took parts in the Liturgical services during Misa de Gallos and the Midnight Masses. During Lenten season, the COM members were assigned for the readings of Via Cruzes and of the Holy Mass, and performed as singers and actors of the SUGAT. The COM’ers were also the catechists during the month of May, the facilitators and prayer leaders of the Flores de Mayo, and Rosary leaders during processions. These and many more were the activities that made the organization very visible in the community. With the support of the Parish Priest, the parents and the Parishioners, the COM organization became a group of young people dedicated to their mission as children of Mary, and most of all, children of God.

In the time when cell phones were not yet popular, Friendster and Facebook were not yet created; young people found joy in joining the COM because of the different religious and social activities which gave them deeper spiritual experiences and the chances to make friends with other young people of other parishes. The different retreats and recollections, the Christmas Parties, the Beach Parties, the different Pilgrimages; one would really say loudly, “I am a COMer.”

After a decade of its existence in Catmon, the COM organization started to dwindle until only three or two members remained active. There were several reasons for that; one is that, the original members, who were the leaders, pursued their college education in the city and looked for jobs afterward. Some eventually started their own family in some other places in the country or in abroad. Also, the emergence of the new organizations like the Youth for Christ, Singles for Christ and the creation of the Parish Youth Coordinating Council, had given the younger generations more options to choose from, making the COM less popular.

Next year, on February 10, 2010, will be the 175th jubilee year celebration of the San Guillermo Parish (Catmon, Cebu). In connection with that, the history of different organizations that existed in the parish are gathered to be included in the souvenir program. The adviser of the group, Mrs. Aurora Dorog tried her best to contact and meet with the COMers who are in Catmon. Just like a miracle, the fire of Mary's love is still burning inside the hearts of the members; all remained committed to the vow. This coming November 27, 2009 is the feast of the Miraculous Medal, a perfect timing for the reunion of the members, the renewal of the vows and the distribution of the medals.

All members are invited to join the event, even those who had forgotten their membership; after all, we have this motto, 'once a COMer, always a COMer!'

Ave Maria!

To Jesus through Mary!
