Reviving the Prime Youth Organization of Catmon in the 90’s

COM stands for the Children of Mary, an organization of young people looking up to Mary, the Mother of God, as the model of Chastity, Obedience, Piety and Charity. The group also is dedicated to the celebration of traditional Catholic devotions, including the Rosary. COM is a well-known part of the life of Catholic Communities worldwide. According St. Catherine Laboure, it is the Blessed Virgin's wish that a Confraternity of the Children of Mary should be founded. The Children of Mary organization flourished in the mid 20th century. It was originally for female members only, but later, male members were accepted in the organization.

As an answer for the Blessed Virgin’s wish, in 1989, Mrs. Aurora Dorog and Mrs. Fe Concha recruited 8 young girls to become members of the Children of Mary, Catmon Unit. From that very small group, the organization increased not just in number, but also in their dedication of following the foot steps of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The group became the voice of the young people of San Guillermo Parish, since during that time, no other youth organization existed.

In the 90’s, the organization was very active in the different Church activities. During the Christmas season, the group always participated in the different fund raising events of the church, adding music to the air by singing Christmas Carols and took parts in the Liturgical services during Misa de Gallos and the Midnight Masses. During Lenten season, the COM members were assigned for the readings of Via Cruzes and of the Holy Mass, and performed as singers and actors of the SUGAT. The COM’ers were also the catechists during the month of May, the facilitators and prayer leaders of the Flores de Mayo, and Rosary leaders during processions. These and many more were the activities that made the organization very visible in the community. With the support of the Parish Priest, the parents and the Parishioners, the COM organization became a group of young people dedicated to their mission as children of Mary, and most of all, children of God.

In the time when cell phones were not yet popular, Friendster and Facebook were not yet created; young people found joy in joining the COM because of the different religious and social activities which gave them deeper spiritual experiences and the chances to make friends with other young people of other parishes. The different retreats and recollections, the Christmas Parties, the Beach Parties, the different Pilgrimages; one would really say loudly, “I am a COMer.”

After a decade of its existence in Catmon, the COM organization started to dwindle until only three or two members remained active. There were several reasons for that; one is that, the original members, who were the leaders, pursued their college education in the city and looked for jobs afterward. Some eventually started their own family in some other places in the country or in abroad. Also, the emergence of the new organizations like the Youth for Christ, Singles for Christ and the creation of the Parish Youth Coordinating Council, had given the younger generations more options to choose from, making the COM less popular.

Next year, on February 10, 2010, will be the 175th jubilee year celebration of the San Guillermo Parish (Catmon, Cebu). In connection with that, the history of different organizations that existed in the parish are gathered to be included in the souvenir program. The adviser of the group, Mrs. Aurora Dorog tried her best to contact and meet with the COMers who are in Catmon. Just like a miracle, the fire of Mary's love is still burning inside the hearts of the members; all remained committed to the vow. This coming November 27, 2009 is the feast of the Miraculous Medal, a perfect timing for the reunion of the members, the renewal of the vows and the distribution of the medals.

All members are invited to join the event, even those who had forgotten their membership; after all, we have this motto, 'once a COMer, always a COMer!'

Ave Maria!

To Jesus through Mary!

First ''KUMBABA'' : Proof of Maca-asnon Unity and Artistry

The Philippines is a country of festivals. Throughout the year, festivals and fiestas are celebrated for different reasons, in different seasons and for different intentions. In Cebu, all municipalities are encouraged by the very culturally inclined governor, Gov. Gwen Garcia to hold a festival each year. Catmon has one, the Bud-bud Kabog Festival. Socio-cultural events like festivals bring out a lot of good things from the people. Unity, cooperation, camaraderie, brotherhood and friendship; these values are nurtured and developed in the participants of the different festivals, both in the old and the young ones. Artists, dancers, musicians, choreographers, stage directors, teachers, students, politicians - are all active participants of this event; anybody has a task to do from the preparation to the final performance of a festival.

This year, the Catmonanons' love of festivals is brought to a higher level. Aside from the Budbud Kabog Festival which is staged every February 10, some barangays are staging their own festivals. The people of Maca-as staged its first Kumbaba festival last October 24, 2009. According to Mr. Nelson Ares, Kumbaba is an old Cebuano word for merrymaking in which food is served by the host, and dancing is done with the accompaniment of a Rondalla. He added that when Catmon was just in the planning stage for its first festival (the Sadsaran), Kumbaba was the other choice for the name. Sadsaran was eventually used for the first festival, which later became the Budbud Kabog Festival. Finally after a few years, Kumbaba is used to name the festival of Barangay Maca-as.

The committee for this year's festival had chosen Kuradang as the contest piece for the Kumbamba. Kuradang is a lively festival dance performed during special occasions like fiestas, wedding and baptismal parties. Kuradang is popular also because of the step that is very distinctive for the music. A famous rendition of Kuradang is by the Visayan artist Max Surban, and this version is used in the Kumbamba festival.

I was so proud with my Maca-asnon heritage as I watched the dancers perform in the Macaas Basketball Court. Of course, my bet was the contingent from Brangay Tabuk, the place where my mother Editha Bravo Ares was born. Their dance was choreographed by my cousin Ernie Vergara, and some of the dancers were my relatives including my Auntie Emie Bravo Jayson. In the end of the show, Barangay Tabuk, was declared the champion, followed by the Barangay Centro for the second place and then by the Lower Laplaya for the third prize.

Next year will be a new and a bigger festival, the Macao-es Festival. It has something to do with the history of the place, where traders from Macao used it as haven after doing their businesses in the nearby places. I am sure that it would be as explosive as the Kumbamba 2009!

Kudus to all the organizers especially to the SK Chairman, Hon. Daneva Geonzon! Truly, Kumbaba united the people of Barangay Maca-as; and an overflow of creativity, aesthetics and pure artistry were enjoyed by those who watched, and experienced by those who participated.

Yellow Day

The life of Corazon Cojuangco Aquino is an open book not just for the Filipinos, but for all the people in the world. Now that she is dead, her story will live on; more chapters will be added to that book by stories of people being inspired by the legacy she had left.

I was in grade one when I first heard the name Cory Aquino, that was in the year 1985. Even though I was very young that time, I had noticed already that there was something very important about this woman. I asked my grade one teacher about her, and she told me that she was the wife of the slain Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino, Jr., a leading figure in the political opposition against the autocratic rule of President Ferdinand Marcos. I did not really understand fully the whole scenario, but deep in my heart I knew that Cory and Ninoy were significant figures in our country. At home, I overheard many times different discussions of my parents and their friends about the state of the nation during that time. I understood that they were supporting this woman, so I think I was influenced by my parents that I had learned to love and support Cory.

Back at school, my class was divided into two, one for the Red group and one for the Yellow group. I'm on the Yellow group, for Cory and the others belonged to the Red for Marcos. The Red group would have to tease us "Cory,KURIKONG (skin diesease)!" And we shouted back, "Marcos, GIKUSKOS (scratched)!" Very childish of us! But it really made sense to me now how really important is to take a stand for an ideology.

Then EDSA revolution came in 1986, which turned out to be a victory for the yellow group. From that time on, I was so certain that Cory Aquino is one of the greatest women rulers in the world; she can be compared to Golda Meir of Israel, Indira Gandhi of India, Tzu-hsi of China, Hatshepsut of Egypt and Elizabeth I of England. My favorite snack that time was PEOPLE POWER, a cheaper version of Chiz Curls which had stickers inside about EDSA revolution. I fondly collected the stickers and pasted it on my notebooks, then showed it with great pride to my classmates especially those who belonged to the red team.

As the President of the Philippines during my elementary years until early high school, I can still recall the good things Tita Cory had contributed to the country. One important thing is the moral standard she had exemplified as the most powerful person in the Philippines. She showed love of democracy and deep faith in the Almighty which are obvious in the policies and programs she had implemented during her term. Even though she was not a perfect President, because no one really is, for me she is the best President yet in my life time.

Democracy comes fro the Greek word demokratia (dêmos = people) (krátos = rule), literally translated as 'popular government'. It is the government of the people, by the people and for the people. This is the greatest legacy the late President Aquino had given to us. Let us all be vigilant in guarding the freedom we have now. Let our patriotism and nationalism be a living honor for Tita Cory.

Katherine Mae Won the Crown

Last July 31, 2009, the pageant and coronation of Miss Intramural Sports of Carmen Nationation High School was done in the school quadrangle. Fourteen lovely candidates were vying for the title in a competition of beauty and brains. The show was hosted by Mr. Jhun Matthew Ares. The judges were Mr. Jillito Ares of Cebu Academy, Mr. Barry Eubank of Carmen Elementary School and Mr. Edgar Tinapay of Liki Elementary School.

The Candidates were competing in three phases; the Production Number, the Sports Wear Competition and the Casual Wear Competition. Based on the three portions, the magic five was chosen. The top 5 ladies proceed to the fourth phase, the question and answer portion. The following made it to the top; Sheena Ria Ginco, Sthepanie Suday, Gladys Remoto, Vanessa Herrera and Katherine Mae Arizo. Eventually, Katherine Mae won the title and will represent the school in the upcoming District Meet selection for Festival Queen.

I was kind of sad when I said goodbye to the ladies who did not make it to the top. But I reiterated to them the words I said during the practice, that "their experience is more important than winning in this competition." This is not Miss Carmen, nor Binibining Pilinas, but this could be a stepping stone for the winners as well as the non-winners for bigger beauty pageants.

I opened the show with the quote from The Little Prince, and I will end this article by writing the line from that story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

" It is only with the heart that one can see rightly, for what is essential is invisible to the eye."

I wish that this line will always remind everybody the true essence of beauty.

MJ

You can sing, dance, or interpret any of Michael Jackson's music. You can copy and imitate his showmanship and production style. But, this great legacy he had offered to the world could never be duplicated. Never!!! There can only be one Michael Jackson!

It is just sad to know that he was not able to realize the European tour he was planning, the thing our very own Charice Pempenco was dreaming to be pushed through since she was asked to have a ‘Billie Jean’ show down with the 'King of Pop'. But nonetheless, his music lives on forever in my heart and in the hearts of his fans all over the world.

I love Michael since I heard ‘Ben’ when I was a child, and watched his videos – ‘Jackson 5 to HIStory’. He had inspired me to choreograph and direct some school presentations of his songs in my elementary and high school years. He was a great innovator, very much ahead of his time, a great singer, dancer, actor and everything!

One important lesson I have learned from his life is to do passionately the things you like, because when a person dies, he will be remembered for the joy he had shown to others.

I want to dedicate this video I found in YouTube for you, Michael. May you rest in peace!!!

'Our Lady' Helps Build a Church

"But the Blessed Virgin Mary should be called Queen, not only because of her Divine Motherhood, but also because God has willed her to have an exceptional role in the work of our eternal salvation."
- Pope Pius XII

An image of the Blessed Virgin Mary reportedly shed tears of blood on August 17 and 22, 1998, in Lindogon, Simala, Sibonga, Cebu. The shedding of tears happened again on 13th of October, the anniversary of the apparition of the Our Lady of Fatima and on 29th of December still on 1998. From that time on, the image is called, ‘Our Lady of Simala’. The miraculous image is now housed in the Monastery of the Holy Eucharist run by the Monks of Mary. Devotees of the Blessed Virgin frequently visit the image on Sibonga. To be able to get there, you have to take approximately a three-hour bus ride from Cebu City. For us Catmonanons, our travel will total up to 5 hours if we will start from our town. But everybody rejoiced when it was announced that the image will visit different parishes to give chances for those who cannot make it to Simala. The icon is scheduled to visit the Parish of Saint Joseph the Worker, Catmon, Cebu on June 26, 27 and 28, 2009.

Today, July 26, 2009, the image is welcomed by prayerful Catmonanons. Streets are full of blue and white flaglets as a sign of warm salutation to the image. The icon will stay at the Catmondaan Chapel until the 28th of July. Parishioners will have now time to honor the Blessed Virgin with prayers and songs. Government as well as non-government organizations will take turn for the vigil schedules.

Students of Carmen National High School leave their classrooms to greet the miraculous icon.

Welcome sign on the boundary of Catmon and Carmen. Blue flaglets are decorated on the streets.

A cloudy sky, which means, it is going to rain...

Parishioners eagerly await the arrival of the icon despite the rain.

Another important reason of the visit is to raise funds for the construction of the Church of the Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, in Panalipan, Catmon, Cebu. Catmon now has two Parishes, San Guillermo de Acquitaña Parish, which will celebrate its 175th anniversary next year and the new Saint Joseph the worker Parish. Since we are now on the times of global recession, raising funds for the church construction is quite a herculean task of the parish priest, Fr. Joriel Chan and the rest of the parishioners. But with everybody’s concern and support, and the prayers of the Blessed Mother, the Church of Saint Joseph the Worker Parish will be finished hopefully in the near future to become proof of God’s love for the people of Catmon.

You can also help build the church. Share your blessings, and we will see in the future a magnificent edifice overlooking the sea at Panalipan, Catmon, Cebu.

BIDLISIW 2008 - 2009

BIDLISIW

Bidlisiw is the official paper of the student body of Carmen National High School. I got hold of a copy last Friday when a female student hand me one after the teachers' practice of a folk dance to be presented this coming Tuesday for the 158th Founding Anniversary of Carmen. The front page made me smile from ear to ear because I saw my students' pictures displayed on it. Paulo Amiel Coloscos, the editor-in-chief wrote the headline about the culmination activity of the English Week '08 which happened to be a Yuletide Showcase. Two of the pictures posted on the upper right corner of the front page are excerpts of the Broadway Musicals which my students performed under my direction and training. The third picture is the Sinulog performance of the Carmen contingent of which majority of the dancers are from CNHS. Almost 90% of the articles of the latest BIDLISIW issue were written by Paulo, and he is not just good, but he is really excellent in writing. Kudos to Paulo! I suggest that he should apply for a staff position in the UP Cebu's TUG-ANI. I'm really sure that he is ready for college campus journalism.

Paulo and proud mother (Mrs. Eunice Coloscos)

Bidlisiw brings back to me the events of the Yuletide Showcase which happened on December 12, 2008. It is just so right that I kept some pictures of the show; and here I posted some clearer take of the performances.

Phantom of the Opera

Yancy Saison, Maria Christina Bregente and Patrick Salili doing the finale of their performance.

Yancy, Christina and Patrick portrayed Raoul, Christine Daae and the Phantom of the Opera respectively; the unforgettable characters of the famed musical by Andrew Lloyd Weber. These three students are really talented, they did their best during our practices and on the final performance as well.

Les Miserables
Pearl Joy Celades as Cosette and Bebilyn Gica as Eponine

Les Miserables is a musical composed in 1980 by the French composer Claude-Michel Schönberg with a libretto by Alain Boublil. Many songs from that play became worldwide hits like 'I Dreamed a Dream' which is currently getting attention in You Tube because of Susan Boyles performance on 'Britains Got Talent' and of course the timeless 'On My Own'.

Bebilyn sang 'On My Own' and the rest of the characters did a dramatic scene from the original story of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, of which the Broadway Musical is based upon. Japhet Villaber's performance as Marius Pontmercy was quite a remarkable one, but his picture was not posted on Bidlisiw, so I am posting one here.

Japhet Villaber and Bebilyn Gica

Bebilyn sang Lea Salonga's version; and after her performance I call her Lea Salonga of CNHS. Here's a YOU TUBE video of Lea's rendition of 'On My Own'.

Center Fold

On the center fold of the paper is a photo gallery of the teachers and students of CNHS. The other two performances of my students are included here. One is the short play which I had written, directed and voiced, 'The Temptation of Talilay', and the other is the choral presentation of my second year section 7 English class, which won the Christmas Carol Competition.

The Temptation of Talilay

The plot of 'The Temptation of Talilay' is very simple and common. It is the dilemma of the student, Talilay (Gladys Remoto), lured by a debonair devil (Norvin dela Calzada) and saved by the flamboyant angel (Arnel Arenza). I had to practice using my voice in various ranges, from the lowest note to the highest one that I can reach to make the characters believable. I felt like I was auditioning for Disney animated movie during their performance. I was just glad that the actors were excellent and had done it like a pro.

Let it Snow

Everybody loves underdogs! Who would have thought that the last section of the sophomore class, the second year section 7, out staged all the pilot classes, from the freshmen to the seniors. It was an amazing feat for my students. Maybe they are lucky enough, but it was not just pure luck; their hard work has paid off! From the daily practices, to the making of props, looking for costumes, during the dress rehearsals, until the final performance; everybody showed enthusiasm and full support for each other. I'm so proud of this class!

More photos of the 2008 Yuletide Showcase on my Multiply account, just click 'Les Miserables', 'Phantom of the Opera', 'Let it Snow' 'The Temptation of Talilay', and 'The Journey'.

And don't forget to get your BIDLISIW copy. I agree with Paulo, it is already a collector's item...
